"Baby Blue" - Vintage 1960's Hawthorne Bicycle
What makes a great rat rod bicycle? A perfect combination of rusty character with new parts underneath to make it ride-able again! That was my goal with this vintage Hawthorne tank bike. It has an old board track motorcycle theme complete with a racing number and wide balloon tires. I also added some extra handmade leather extras for extra character (spur rowel mudflap, leather grips, carved number plate).
I call this bike "Baby Blue" and it has received lots of compliments wherever I've ridden it.
~ Approx 60 year old Hawthorne tank bike (built in early 60's)
~ Baby blue 26" wheels with Nexus internal 3 speed hub
~ New 26" x 2.125 Motorcycle-style whitewall tires
~ Leather carry handle
~ Monarch dual spring suspension fork
~ Leather grips with baseball stitch
~ Hand-tooled leather mudflap with cowboy spur rowel, and twisted 2-color fringe
~ New baby blue chain
~ Comfortable leather covered spring seat
~ Handmade leather number plate with baby blue #4
~ Replaced & serviced 1-piece crank with Schwinn sprocket
~ Leather FX Saddle Company emblems
~ Lots of patina & character
IMPORTANT: With 3 speeds, this bike is very ride-able however larger tires did create some challenges. The front tire bottomed out when riding over bumps so I have flipped the rocker plates to make the front springs less effective (for safety reasons). The rear fender and tire have minimal clearance and required some time to perfectly adjust for no scraping. If you choose to ship this bike, this may require additional tweaking to get perfect again.
Please ask prior to purchasing if you have any questions or would like to see additional photos.
The bike will be packaged & shipped professionally by the local bike shop unless you choose to pickup in Ephrata, PA.
